Tracking calories is tough, but it’s an easy and proven way to lose weight. There are a lot of myths and misconceptions about nutrition out there, but the basic fact is that if you want to lose weight, you need to burn more calories than you are taking in. 2.)    Carbs are NOT the enemy. Carbohydrates are a macronutrient that your body needs in order to function. Carbs give your body energy. If you were to only eat proteins, you would be taking in far fewer calories. Your body might function fine for a few days, but in order to give your body the proper amount of energy, carbs are absolutely necessary.

3.)    Soda and juice drinks pack a lot of sugar. Too much sugar means too many calories. You need calories to move around and even to stay awake, but if you are taking in too many calories, you will gain fat. Soda has a ton of sugar and therefore a ton of calories. If you are trying to lose weight, cutting out the sugary drinks will be an easy way to start reducing your caloric intake.

4.)    Fat is good for you. That is, in moderation, of course. Your body needs a certain amount of fat in order to store energy. If you had no body fat, you would need to eat every 15 minutes or so in order to avoid a complete collapse. Fat is a macronutrient that your body cannot do without. Just make sure that you aren’t eating foods that are overly saturated in fat. Avoid trans fats and stay smart in this respect.

5.)     Running a deficit is not easy. In order to lose weight, you need to burn off more calories than you are taking in through your diet. This is not easy, especially in our food oriented culture. Still, if you want to burn one pound of fat per week, you need to run a caloric deficit of about 500 per day. Figuring out how many calories you burn per day is pretty simple, and if you religiously track your calorie intake, you can become a lot more aware of just what your nutritional picture looks like.
